Popson Park
Popson Park spans over 133 hectares in Lethbridge’s southwest river valley. It offers an extensive network of limestone and gravel trails perfect for walking, hiking, and exploring the coulees. The park is best known for its off‑leash dog area, where pups can roam freely and splash in the river. Families and groups can reserve the covered picnic shelter, relax at riverside tables, or launch boats from the beach and access the Oldman River—ideal for fishing or floating adventures (portage required past a downstream weir).
Nature lovers appreciate the undeveloped grasslands and native prairie plant communities, with stands of cottonwood trees, blue grama grass, needle-and-thread grass, and seasonal cactus clusters. The park is also home to the Oldman River Observatory and hosts events like stargazing sessions organized by the Lethbridge Astronomy Society. Visitors should be aware of potential rattlesnake sightings in warmer months and stay on marked paths for safety.
With easy river access, natural beauty, recreational amenities, and a welcoming vibe for dog owners, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts, Popson Park is a favourite hidden gem in Lethbridge’s river valley system.
