Join us this Friday as the Dragon Boat Association of Southern Alberta welcomes back their dragon boat, which is now on display at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden!

The Coulee Classic Dragons are heading to Kansai, Japan in 2021 for the World Masters Games and we are pleased to host their celebration and blessing ceremony at Nikka Yuko on December 6.

Ceremonies and a Lion Dance will begin at 7PM inside the garden. Everything is included with your admission to the garden.

Why is there a dragon boat in the pond at the Japanese garden??

In 2001, Rotary clubs in Lethbridge fundraised and purchased 2 teak dragon boats (green and blue) from a Calgary club and gifted them to the Lethbridge Abreast of ‘bridge crew.  Over time new boats were acquired and the boats were given new homes.  It came to the attention of the Dragon Boat of Southern Alberta that the blue boat was in storage in Elkwater and was not being used.  In November she was brought back home!! In May of 2021, Kansai Japan is hosting the World Masters Games – and DASA is pleased to announce that with the support of our friends at the Nikka Yuko Gardens, our own Coulee Classic Dragons Master Women’s team welcomes this occasion to introduce ourselves, showcase our love of dragon boating, and outline the sponsorship opportunities that will be available moving forward as we prepare to represent Canada as athletes and ambassadors of our city and the Gardens while in Japan.

Southern Alberta’s eminent women’s dragon boat team, the Coulee Classic Dragons are continuing to shine in national and international competition.

Competing under the Master Women's 50+ Senior B umbrella the team gained national experience while participating in the Canadian National Dragon Boat Championships in Regina this past summer. International challenges came during the 2017 World Masters Games in New Zealand, followed by the Pan Pacific Masters Games last fall in Australia.

Training year round on and off the water, the Coulee Classics have their sights set on the Canada 55+ Summer Games next August and the ultimate goal the 2021 World Master Games in Kansai, Japan.
